Appleseed

I’m not a big Japanese Manga fan.

Only heard some small buzz about this film, and, having a little interest in the genre of sci-fi manga, I decided to check it out.

Well, the result was both disappointing and entertaining. Visually speaking I can’t complain. This film is a feast for the eyes. Storywise it sucks big time, typical clichés all over the plot line.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh on the story. Maybe it has some originality in essence; but in execution it just can’t get me interested enough to care for the characters. None of the major lines of the plot really amount to much, the robot-human love line too boring, the saving the world and fighting for the future line too familiar; at times I wish the characters would just shut up and fight their big robot fights. That’s about the only entertaining part of the film.

This is purely a technically driven film, the only attraction being the eye candy it generously hands out throughout the film. So in this sense its worth seeing, at least once; but before soon the plot will be forgotten, and the film, when other technically more dazzling features come out, will probably have the same fate as the “bioroids” this film keeps ranting on about: cloned humans with exceptionally short life-spans.

7/10
