U Turn
Now here’s an interesting film. You take a very good ensemble cast that has Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Billy Bob Thorton and Jon Voight (not to mention Joaquin Phoenix in a hilarious role), you set it all in a god forsaken town in the middle of nowhere, you make sure it’s a damn hot day, and you talk about a man’s pure bad luck.
And that’s what the film is all about– crazy bad luck for Sean Penn’s character Bobby. His car breaks down (otherwise he wouldn’t be in this town called Superior in the first place), and he delivers it into the hands of crazy mechanic Billy Bob Thornton; since he has some time to spare, he decides to do some sightseeing in town, which leads him to the incredibly hot and ready Jennifer Lopez, and before he knows it, he’s got himself all mixed up in a lot of trouble.
Oliver Stone has a fetish on luxurious editing, and again he brings a film rich in visuals. The music is by Ennio Morricone, so what more can I say.
Yet the film somehow falls flat, as if it took an U-turn right before the finish line. There’s enough sarcasm and irony in the twists that just keeps on coming, but perhaps it’s Jennifer Lopez’s acting, or perhaps it’s the whole feel of the film, and I just wasn’t interested enough by the end. Or perhaps it’s just because I don’t like this kind of films anyway.
