Confidence (2003)
Confidence boosts a fine ensemble cast, with Edward Burns, Paul Giamatti, and names like Dustin Hoffman & Andy Garcia. Rachel Weisz plays the female love interest.
The film’s intentions could be said with a different way of speeling the title: CONfidence– it’s a con film. Con films are always popular, from the good old days of The Sting with Robert Redford & Paul Newman to stylish modern films like Confidence. And “Confidence” is indeed all about style in the execution– the plot is relatively easy to understand once you’ve finished the film, but the storytelling does get you guessing in different directions while watching.
Unfortunately, some bits and pieces of the film do tend to look overly familiar. But the actors more than make up for it in their casual and accurate performances. It’s always nice to see Dustin Hoffman as the bad guy, and in this film’s case, a really horny bad guy who’s got more than your ordinary dose of lust for woman (apparently).
Still, this is not a very original piece of work, and will probably be easily forgotten in years to come. But for a simple 90 minutes’ dose of quality entertainment, it is on the mark.
8 out of 10.
