After Hours (1985)
I went into the film expecting it to be rather dull. But then again, none of Scorsese’s pictures I’ve seen would qualify as entertaining– that word seems to be demeaning for such a director, and all of his works are critiques of the American society, or perhaps more especially life in New York.
“After Hours” though, proved to be a fascinating viewing experience. Perhaps it is one of Scorsese’s lesser known films. This film has a dark and twisted comical feeling to it, the bizzareness of the events that happen to the main character, the seemingly never ending New York midnight, and not to mention all the weird and wacky characters that pop up throughout the film.
Basically, the plot is about a journey for the main charatcer Paul. He meets a gorgeous girl after work, and decides to call her up. She tells him to come over. He goes over to her apartment, and that starts a chain of events lasting throughout the night, with Paul getting involved in a suicide, getting chased by a crazy vigilante mob, getting papier-mached into a sculpture which in turn gets stolen… The sarcasm and the comedy just does not seem to end.
8 out of 10.
