Yojimbo (1961)

January 23rd, 2006 No comments

A film by Kurosawa, Yojimbo is the original that inspired A Fistful of Dollars. The two have almost identical plots, and it is an interesting experience to have watched the two films in the reverse order.
To make things even more interesting, after reading the comments on IMDB a little bit, I found that it appears that Sergio Leone’s western was in fact sued for copyright infringement by the Japanese. So now it is duely recognized as a re-make of Kurosawa’s classic.
Indeed, Yojimbo outshines A Fistful of Dollars in ways more than one. Both films could be classified as action films, and Dollars enjoys the honor of being one of the most famous spaghetti westerns ever, but Yojimbo simply contains far more depth in its story. After the final showdown, I did not feel relieved that the town was rid of evil; instead a heaviness continued to loom in my mind. As with Kurosawa’s other films, I felt a sense of compassion towards the peasant class, who were the victims of suffering. Kurosawa’s film simply shows more about the characters.

January 21st, 2006 2 comments

Good to Great

January 21st, 2006 No comments

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

January 20th, 2006 No comments

This is a zombie film, and therefore (yet another) a rarity for me. I don’t profess to have understood it entirely; indeed, Shaun of the Dead is quite a complex film, with satire and metaphors hidden here and there. And it being a homage to the great Dead series by George Romero, further hinders my understanding since I have not seen that cult series.
However, the film in itself is quite easy to enjoy. I dislike blood and gore, so there are times that this film really makes me uncomfortable, but the comedy is pleasant to enjoy. The big joke that there is no difference between real zombies and the people alive brings out interesting questions that we should all ask ourselves: what is the purpose of our life? Are we just dragging past each day like zombies?
Perhaps I need to watch more films, to fully appreciate the beauty of something like this.

Straw Dogs (1971)

January 16th, 2006 No comments

Recently I’ve watched two very violent films, one the aptly titled A History of Violence, and the other one being this film, Straw Dogs.
Through reputation, I’ve come to know Straw Dogs as one of the monumental films about violence, and a controversial one at that. I also knew that it had a very explosive final half hour.
With this much information prehand, perhaps I was somewhat relieved of what could have been a much more intense viewing experience. The film and its setting has an eerie presence, and the small and old English town, which seems a bit medieval, slowly grows into a haunting menace. The townsfolk all seem a bit queer or odd, and perhaps could be described as primitive. Their feelings and conflicts are very explicit.
The film itself is also explicit. The one person that I’ve really come to hate, is the lead actress, Susan George, who plays Amy. Amy seems to be such an annoying character: she’s immature, unfaithful, selfish and cowardly. She initially pushes her equally weak husband (Dustin Hoffman) to warn off some unfriendly townsfolk, and when he lacks the courage, her own courage crumbles. In fact, she becomes so cowardly that her husband has to give her a beating to make her behave in the final showdown. What a frustrating character.
Yet I’m now thinking, the reason I detest her so much, is just because her weakness is so representative of so many of us. It is like a big symbol of our own weakness and cowardice, and the symbol is explicit and un-comfortable. And that’s why we hate it so much. It’s just the brutal fact.
Having watched A History of Violence the day before, I was quite numb to the violence, yet still shocked. This is a brutal film, one that pushes violence to a grotesque and mean degree, and one that it would leave a scar in my memory.

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

January 16th, 2006 No comments

January 16th, 2006 1 comment

The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

January 15th, 2006 No comments
This is a plain comedy about sex. I’m not too keen on comedies, especially ones that are low in content, but this film has some of its own merits.
In this film, Steve Carell stares as a unfortunate 40 year old who’s never done it before, hence the origin of the title. When his co-workers accidentally stumble upon this secret, they do everything they can to help him. Which is the basic premise of the story: an 40 year old virgin trying to break his cherry, and the hilarious antics that happen in due course.
Of course, if it’s just about that, then this film would amount to nothing. In a way, Virgin tries to be bigger than that, and subtely discusses the modern sex culture as we know it. Well, not so subtle, but at least done in a relatively acceptable sort of way. And it tries to push some of the finer traditional virtues, such as saving the best for that precious first night, or at least “let’s not turn our relationship into a pure physical one”.
The film is mildly interesting and entertaining, and there are some points where I am laughing my head off. But still it just drags far too long as a comedy–nearly 2 and a half hours!? And by the end of it, I could really understand how painful it is to be a virgin at that old an age–it’s just like watching this film never end.
