The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Actually, this is a hard film to rate. There are some bits and pieces that I quite enjoy, but on the whole the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feels more like a freak show than a good piece of summer entertainment.
Sean Connery is a great actor, and I like seeing him play cool at an old age. Thus to some extent, this film is very likable. Yet like many other summer action flicks, it falls into the trap of taking itself too seriously. The “I lost a son, that’s why I’ve been hiding in Africa, and now I’m gonna treat you like a son” stuff is cheesy as hell, and it could be seen a mile off that old 007 is going to sacrifice himself for the not-a-bit likable cowboy kid. Ms. Vampire and Mr. Eternal Life are two interesting characters, but their interaction never amounts to much, beyond some sex.
And the plot, oh does it have so many problems. Actually I can forget the holes, but there is a profound lack of pace in the execution, and the film just drags on most of the time.
So for a film with some interesting premises, this one never does end up anywhere. But it does have a few good moments.
6/10
