The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
This is a plain comedy about sex. I’m not too keen on comedies, especially ones that are low in content, but this film has some of its own merits.
In this film, Steve Carell stares as a unfortunate 40 year old who’s never done it before, hence the origin of the title. When his co-workers accidentally stumble upon this secret, they do everything they can to help him. Which is the basic premise of the story: an 40 year old virgin trying to break his cherry, and the hilarious antics that happen in due course.
Of course, if it’s just about that, then this film would amount to nothing. In a way, Virgin tries to be bigger than that, and subtely discusses the modern sex culture as we know it. Well, not so subtle, but at least done in a relatively acceptable sort of way. And it tries to push some of the finer traditional virtues, such as saving the best for that precious first night, or at least “let’s not turn our relationship into a pure physical one”.
The film is mildly interesting and entertaining, and there are some points where I am laughing my head off. But still it just drags far too long as a comedy–nearly 2 and a half hours!? And by the end of it, I could really understand how painful it is to be a virgin at that old an age–it’s just like watching this film never end.
