King Kong (2005)

King Kong was probably the biggest film event of 2005, and while not a masterpiece, it does a great job of offering a spectacular movie experience.
Peter Jackson basically inherited his artfullness at making complicated and awe-inspiring CGI-filled action scenes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There’s a lot to enjoy visually. Plotwise, the film often falls flat with plotholes and rather convenient developments.
My main complaint would be that the film is far too long for its own good. There are at least one or two long action sequences that are honestly out of place–they play no part in plot development, nor do they really tell us anything except from showing off some CG animated monsters. Which are horrible, by the way.
That said, the final 30 minutes are well executed and breathtaking. King Kong’s sad end is well shot, and there is a sense of strong emotional impulses around the end. This just makes it even more unacceptable that in the earlier parts of the film so much time was wasted on trivial stuff.
In all, this film is meant to be watched for its visuals, while the plot surely could be better.
8/10
