Debate on Wiki… again
Today the whole “Wiki banned in China” issue raised another debate on newsmth. This is one of those issues that really pisses me off every time I am reminded about it, and that’s why I feel I’ve got to let some steam off.
I realize that my preference or liking towards Wiki could be irrational; indeed, “sinister” forces might be out there who want to use this platform to really harm our great “Socialist” China. A platform for the “counterrevolutionaries” to really work on some bad stuff, slandering the country and all that.
But does banning it completely achieve anything? Apart from just indicating that it’s a brazen policy to keep the mass public dumb and stupid? So that we could be better “managed”?
And this is what makes me so angry about the whole issue: we, the public, are robbed of a choice. We are denied our freedom to information, in the name of protecting “national interests”. But if something is not in the interests of the people, how could it be in the interests of the nation?
Unless, of course, that nation is not interested in looking after the interests of its people. What the government seems to be so keen on, after all, is looking after the interests of its fat politicians and the wellbeing of their well-off families and friends.
Okay, I know I sound very irrational. But I guess it goes to show how severe I think the issue is.
