I am Sam (2001)

For a film that features a low-IQ character with a very simple wish (wanting to take care of his daughter), I am Sam is over-constructed and ultimately too cheesy to feel genuine. However, that doesn’t stop Sean Penn from delivering a home-run performance.

Penn is Sam, the title character who has only the intelligence of a 7-year-old. By some strange event (one night stand?), a woman gives birth to his child and then abandons them both. Sam raises up the little girl (with help from his neighbors and friends), but as Lucy grows older life gets difficult as she begins to understand her father is different.

On her seventh birthday, the party carefully arranged by her father goes wrong, and child care steps in to take Lucy away from Sam. What ensues is a legal battle for Sam’s parental rights, and Sam enlists help from an unlikely lawyer Rita (Michelle Pfeiffer).

The real life and in-court struggle makes up most of the film’s time, and there’s plenty of tear-evoking scenes. Too much, in fact, as after the first few attempts though Penn’s performance is still an awe to watch, the scenes feel too familiar and manipulated. And I feel that’s the central issue of this film – it feels too artificial to evoke my real emotions.

WordPress 2.5

WordPress 2.5 has been released, and is a major update with lots of changes. The most obvious is that the dashboard has been reorganized, and now looks cleaner.

I’ve yet to feel out all the details, but features like one-click plugin upgrade (instead of just notifying you that there’s newer versions) make 2.5 even more automated and easier to use. Lowering the tech learning curve is definitely the direction for wordpress to head to achieve real mainstream.

大灌篮(2008)

《大灌篮》是商业包装缜密的娱乐作品,无厘头的剧本以及群星的合力娱乐既是其卖点也是其局限所在。

片子的娱乐性无可否认,无论是主要演员还是客串登场的一众群星,无不尽心尽力为大众炮制笑料。然而这种部分讽刺幽默(譬如黄健翔的那段自嘲式演出)与大量无厘头搞笑的合体并不十分和谐;影片剧本的智商大部分时间处于弱智级别;而叙事本身更是毫无节奏可言。这无碍观众的哈哈一笑,但决定了影片注定是容易被忘却的。或许这本就不重要,娱乐大众的同时赚得满盆是其目的也是其结果。

说到商业包装,简单列一下看到的品牌和出现场合(有些出现的地方倒是蛮搞笑的):

  • 德尔惠:周杰伦代言的运动品牌,出现在所有的篮球上,以及体育馆内广告牌
  • 扶他林:某室外篮球场片段,背景里有一人在抹膝盖,大概是在用扶他林
  • 剑南春:体育馆场边广告牌
  • 动感地带:同上
  • Polo劲情·劲取:体育馆内广告牌,球队入场画面;队长开的车
  • 芬必得、Kleenex、百事可乐:体育馆内广告牌

印度·住行

还是关于印度,之前没有写完的东西。

草草地说完了衣食,说一说住和行。

对于游客,印度当前正在面临酒店业奇缺的境地,按照同事的说法,就是印度政府邀请全世界的游客来,但没有给他们盖酒店。这个状况据说要持续到2010年前后。也就是说,在此之前外宾们只能继续忍受或者500美金一晚的5星级酒店价格,或者非常低档乃至危险的小旅馆。困境在于,中档价位与质量的酒店,貌似当前是几乎不存在的,而酒店式公寓的概念也好像刚刚在兴起。

我的同事,那个非常独特的澳大利亚人Alex,给我们讲过他的一个恐怖经历。有一次深夜来到德里,他订好位子的“33”宾馆(就是我们忍辱负重住了近两个月的地方)告诉他没有房间了,进而把他推荐到了“兄弟”宾馆,一个名曰“The Heavenly”的地方。那地方名副其实,阴暗的楼道,破旧的房间,发馊了的被褥(里面爬着虫子)。Alex最后抱着腿在椅子上看只有印度语的电视,好歹盼到了天亮。

印度老百姓的住房,与印度的整体硬件设施水平一样,也还比较落后。我去过同事的家里,在德里的两个郊区之一。这里应该说是中上等的住宅小区了,地方大,层高较高,大理石的地面,大概都是为了炎炎夏日准备的。

印度的富豪是出了名的,豪宅自不消说。然而占印度人口绝大多数的中下层的住宿条件必然没有那么好了。在德里的大街上,每每可看到露天住宿的贫民,一个牛棚式的家都可算是奢侈的,很多人都只是有个黑黑的小帐篷。我不知道这些人以什么谋生,想来是些基本的劳动,或者是乞讨。刚刚过去的这个冬天,德里比往常要冷许多,最低接近零摄氏度,街上夜晚也随处可见一处处篝火——不知道这是否足够。

在印度没有坐火车,可能是个遗憾。道听途说到的说法,譬如火车车厢门是从来不关的,在火车外面(车顶等处)比火车里面的乘客要多(其实都是因为太热)等等。从客户口中则听到包了一节车厢去旅游,进去发现好多蟑螂等。不一而足。

对于普罗大众,日常的交通工具有畜力代步、自行车、摩的、摩托车和汽车等。畜力代步在城市里并不太多见,在乡村则是五花八门,骡子、驴、马、骆驼、大象。。。城市里骑车和开摩托车的人颇多,这种方式也比较适合德里混乱的交通状况(就好比从清华到中关村,骑自行车经常是最快的方式)。

三轮摩的是最便宜的出租车,并且是可以打表的。当然安全性也是打了折扣的,后排座位没有门,超载又是常事,于是我时常觉得人可以直接被颠出去。当然印度人是非常适应在行进中上下车的——可参考公交车,也大多是没有车门的,车门处总“挂”着几位乘客,并且车经常是进站不停稳的。我也曾目睹老人身手矫健地追上公交车跳上。

小轿车当然也有很多。本土的Tata,以及大概是印日合资的Maruti Suzuki车非常多。这里的车有个特点,左右后视镜通常是摘掉的,这样车子更能钻空。

当然,路上由此就是一路盲开。少有车子侧面是没有刮痕或者小坑的,印度人在路上相撞了也往往一分钟内了事,互相骂上几句就完了,而不像国内必然会停车算账。

航空,我之前已经写过一些,简而言之就是设施老化,效率低下,空中堵塞是常事——从德里到孟买的航线,正常只有两个多小时的行程,但是在空中多逗留一到两个小时都是正常的。

货币战争

买之前不知道这本书是去年的畅销书,只是许久前在一个论坛潜水时看到其多次在讨论时被引用。于是上周在机场,为了打发时间买了一本。

再次证明,在机场能买到的书大抵是快餐文化。《货币战争》简而言之是一部煽动性极强的“传奇”式作品,与其说是正经的金融学讨论不若说是民粹化的阴谋论。

作者的观点(或者说,作者整理的观点,因为这本书被大家说是编译而不是原著)很乱,但也很简单,就是世界是被国际银行家统治的,他们的终极理想是控制世界的货币发行权进而牟利。国际银行家是泛指,但也特指犹太的罗斯柴尔德家族(作者声称他们才是世界首富,并且是上万亿美元的财富。。。)。杂糅在书中的其它重要观点还包括只有黄金白银才是最本质的货币,脱离金本位是银行家的一个重大的阴谋。

不消说,书中的许多观点和概念是颠覆历史和金融学常识的。所以我认为,这本书是本彻头彻尾的屁股决定大脑的读物——你若支持这种阴谋论,那你就可以接受它的观点,因为阴谋论的基本出发点就是“常识”是精心设计的谎言。在这个层面上,想进行辩论是徒劳的,因为阴谋论者从根本上不承认你的学术体系——可参考无神论者和有神论者辩论神存不存在。

正巧我正在读的另一本书,《伟大的帝国》,一个美国作者讲述美国的发家史。两本书对待美联储的态度就是截然相反的。在《货币战争》中,美联储被描绘成了银行家剥削世人的终极武器,而美国的若干开国先祖(以杰斐逊为代表)是坚决抵制中央银行的成立的,是伟大的英雄,美国18、19世纪的若干次大衰退都是银行家与美国政府围绕成立中央银行展开的经济斗争;而在《伟大的帝国》中,作者认为缺少中央银行是美国经济发展之初一直的死穴(进而导致那些衰退),而杰斐逊等对中央银行的敌视被描绘成不合时宜的陈腐观点。同样的事件,同样的人物,完全相反的解读。如果给两派足够的时间,都可以把己方的观点包装得滴水不漏,那么读者相信哪一方,就完全取决于读者自身的立场倾向了。

广告,上限在哪里?

昨天晚上很无聊,一个人吃饭。期间翻阅一本财经类杂志,封面文章是关于分众传媒以及江南春。有两个主要文章,一个是关于分众最近的高层人士变动,另一篇则是回顾了分众传媒的收购史,并分析说,这种并购还会一直持续下去,因为这就是分众模式。

我不是广告业行家,不过我去年做过一个该行业的项目,analyst report多少读了一些。按照我肤浅的理解,任何形式的广告的核心问题是,如何衡量其功效?因为只有当广告的价值可以衡量时,卖家才能为其定最好(合理)的价格,买家也才能心甘情愿地买单。

我看过分众的一些sales pitch文件,吹嘘其CPM(千人成本)相比电视如何如何好(多少带有欺骗性),这就是试图在为其产品定价提供合理性。CPM是广告业最基本的衡量指标之一,但远不是唯一的指标。

我想,分众面临的问题有这么几个。其核心的楼宇广告业务,首先面临着广告库存增长有限的问题。虽然还会不断地有新的地产出现,从而提供新的库存,然而,一来这里存在着边际效益递减的问题(真正值钱的楼宇数量的增长速度显然会低于整体地产业的增长速度),二来分众面临着不断抬升的租金成本——既然你的毛利率这么好,那么这些楼盘显然会要求分更大的一杯羹。

分众的其它业务也不是一帆风顺。分众无线,最近在央视的手机垃圾短信黑幕曝光中成为焦点,想必江南春这些天没睡好觉。而其网络广告公司(好耶广告),身处一个增长飞快但也竞争激烈的市场,而这个池子里最大的鱼不是别人,正是Google。分众和Google正在走相反的路——分众从更接近老媒体的户外广告(毕竟,只是在不同的地点播同样的电视广告)杀入互联网,而Google则是从互联网开始向老媒体渗透(平面媒体、广播、电视)。两家公司不是一个量级的,目前的直接竞争也不多(Google在中国业务相当弱),不过这会是个有趣的对比。拭目以待。

说到底,我的根本疑问其实在于,在广告日益无所不在的今天,广告的效力还能有多少?最近有一项关于互联网display ad的研究显示(链接忘了。。。),很多互联网用户会有意识地不看那些大幅广告,因此实际上这种广告的效果可能很差。同理,当最开始只是写字楼里有广告的时候,大家或许会好奇地看,而如今,居民楼、ktv等娱乐场所乃至卫生间里都密布着大大小小的广告屏,如此密集的轰炸下,消费者会否生成免疫力呢?

最后再扯一点。。。回到分众传媒,在它所在的户外广告市场(OOH – Out of Home Advertising),说到底相当于老媒体是个小众市场、分众市场。分众传媒固然是整合了一系列的分众市场,然而这些市场的规模本身都不如何可观——我隐约有一个观点,就是在这些小市场所构成的池塘里,只能养活一条大鱼(分众传媒)——有点像红牛,在功能性饮料里,它是很难被撼动的,因为那个市场的需求就那么大,只能容许它一家。分众传媒不是红牛,它正在积极转型为一家多种经营的广告公司,这其中的考验是分众传媒的核心能力到底是什么,这种能力能否助其完成其谋划的转型。

这一周,在上海

这一周出差来上海。本来只是周二一天的差,开个会就好,后面几天放假到婺源看油菜花去。结果会议先是改到周四而后改到周五,进而为了我不虚此行给我安排了些工作。真的变成出差了。。。

油菜花计划泡汤,那就算了吧。反正04年看过青海的了。

说到青海,顺带说点别的。最近西边颇不和谐。网上当然风声鹤唳,cnn和youtube接连被伟大的墙盾掉。当局这样做是其一贯政策的延续,我觉得也没什么好说的,也没太大意见,就是觉得可惜了。cnn直接是外国媒体,封了也就封了,youtube倒本可以是个统一战线,也确有国人积极利用该平台来向西方阐述我们中国人的角度(我收到了一个这样的链接,不过我觉得该君愤青有余,理性不足,何况还有白字,因此宣传效果不佳),政府一刀切的砍掉,固然斩杀了外人的言论渗透,但也砍掉了人民爱国的表达。这也是政府一贯的做法——wikipedia也是同样的情况。我还是老观点,可惜,可惜。

就说这些吧,多说无益。莫谈国事。

Maze的新功能

在教育网有一定用户与人气的天网Maze,最近有了更新版。一个比较显著的变化似乎是对困扰该系统已久的违禁文件(色情、反动等)类别进行了下载限制。

现在,再打开任何一个maze用户,文件列表最上方多了一行“系统提示:该用户有x个可能敏感的文件被过滤”,而若试图下载业已被系统定性为敏感的文件,则会出现“该文件为敏感文件,不推荐下载”的提示,进而无法下载。

我不清楚这个系统是按照什么原理来识别文件的,猜想是某种关键词过滤。当然这并不难解决全部问题——譬如更改文件名、中间插入其它符号等网上常用的避开关键词过滤的方法,这里大概也是全部适用的。

Maze一直是一个比较小众的软件。随着清华bt等教育网乃至校园网的其它快速下载方式的建立,maze大概还会更加边缘化。不过它仍具有一定的自身优势,我想还会继续发展一段时间。

King of California (2007)

Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood star in this likable but flawed comedy-drama about the relationship between an eccentric father and his 16 year-old daughter. As another film featuring a dysfunctional family (these films are a dime a dozen, it seems, with Evan Rachel Wood herself starring in the 2006 flawed effort Running With Scissors), King of California doesn’t break new ground and instead meanders its way through its 93 minute running length, however the dynamic between the two leads are so strong that the film is still an enjoyable experience.

Michael Douglas is Charlie, a man who has just got out of a mental institution. He comes back to live his his daughter Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood), who has given up school for work to make ends meet. Charlie, who has been unstable most of his life it seems, has a new obsession – he believes there is Spanish gold to be found in their neighborhood. This sets the context for most of the film, in which father and daughter go about doing a bunch of wacky things.

Those events, while interesting, soon get repetitive, and that is the major flaw of the film. The plot is nonsensical, and while that’s acceptable for a comedy, I felt that the film swung between playing serious and fun, and the overall mix was much left to be desired. Maybe it’s just my personal preference; but I felt that the story didn’t flow as well as it could have.

Despite this major flaw, the film still scores due to its likable characters. It’s evident Douglas is having so much fun with his role, and he pulls off an effortless yet spot-on performance. Wood, on the other hand, has the instantly likable role of the unfortunate daughter who has to live with such a dad, and she is charmingly on top of it from the start.

In the end, the film does injustice to its two leads who give all-round splendid performances, but at least it makes for a pleasant one and a half hours which laughter is guaranteed.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

With such a long (and stupid, if I may say so) title, it is not surprising that this arthouse western itself suffers from the same lack of conciseness. Which is ultimately unfortunate, since this film boasts many other qualities, such as great cinematography and music, as well as a very satisfying final 30 minutes. All that, though, cannot redeem the derailed film that runs at 160 minutes long.

The film stars Brad Pitt as Jesse James, the celebrity American outlaw of the 19th century, and Casey Affleck as Robert Ford, the man who (no surprises here) killed James. The story revolves around the final days of James, and how Ford transforms from a young man who idolized James to “the Coward”. While the source material is definitely interesting – James was a true murderous thug, but the people of his time seemed to genuinely adore him as a public celebrity – the plot leaves too many questions unanswered, such as the most basic one, “why did Ford decide to do it?”

Even worse, most of the film’s time is wasted on side characters (the other members of the James gang) that are neither interesting nor contribute to the portrayal of the central characters. The middle 2 hours of this film is completely sidetracked and boring.

The film sort of redeems itself in the final 30 minutes (another one of those films…), in the climax (the killing) and ironically, the epilogue. A brief but much more interesting look at Ford’s life after being labeled as the Coward (and Ford’s own untimely demise) is offered, and this is far more engaging material. However, it comes too short too late to really save the picture.
