Exhausted

Flew back to Beijing last night, connecting via Singapore. Absolutely trashed, yet still in office…

Singapore airport is quite well designed, and creates a genuinely interesting shopping experience (as opposed to a lot of other airports). Capital airport definitely can learn something from them – it’s not just about the hardware.

Standardization

May 30th, 2008 No comments

Haven’t really blogged in English for a while, except writing film posts. Try my hand here on a topic essay, since I’m taking TOEFL tomorrow.

I want to talk about the virtue of standardization, that is, of having a product or a process conform to a widely accepted set of standards.

I was recently in Jakarta (and will be spending some more time there the next two months). Jakarta has a very unique mass transit system, the Transjakarta. Essentially, it’s a high speed bus system that enjoys an closed lane and only stops at major destinations – it’s purpose is to serve passengers who need to travel around the sprawling metropolis fast. What’s most interesting about this system though, is the buses themselves – they are largely not different from your normal buses, but the doors and the seats are elevated – the door is a full 1.5 meters above ground (my estimate).

And therefore the bus stops are special too. They are also elevated platforms.

There might be some reasons for this elevated height (though I can’t really think of too many reasons that stand scrutiny), but one downside immediately comes to mind – this design (which doesn’t follow regular bus design standards) probably costs more to produce (since it’s unique). Worse, it confines future upgrades (for example new buses) to this system to either stick to this design or replace all the terminals. Future choices have been vastly limited.

It could be though, that this is exactly the point. I’m thinking crooked officials receiving kickbacks to impose this locked-down system, which is another form of monopoly for the supplier.

21 (2008)

May 24th, 2008 No comments

21 tells the story of the MIT blackjack team, or rather, a fairly fictional story loosely based on that source material. Reading up Wikipedia, it seems the real-life story is far more intriguing than what this film has to offer, which again serves to prove that life is often larger than fiction.

Anyway – the film follows a gifted young MIT student Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) who dreams of going to Harvard Medical School. He’s accepted, but he can’t afford the tuition, and the scholarship is intensely competitive. However his luck changes when his gift for logic and composure is spotted by a Prof. Micky Rosa (deftly played by Kevin Spacey), and he is subsequently recruited into a blackjack team, trained how to count cards, and travels to Vegas over the weekends to play it big against the casinos.

The most interesting element of the film is the methods of card counting. I actually paused the film to read up Wikipedia on card counting, and it’s quite an entertaining read if you’re somewhat interested in maths. The team in the film uses a simple Hi-Lo system, which assigns cards 2-6 a +1 value, 7-9 a 0 value, and 10-13 a -1 value. For each card dealt, the player adds the card’s assigned value to his/her existing count. The counting is not to remember individual cards, but rather what is ratio of higher value / lower value cards already dealt. So if the current count is a high positive number, that means there have been more lower value cards dealt, and the chances of being dealt a higher value card is higher, which is to the player’s advantage (higher chance of blackjack).

That’s the basic premise for the team, and their strategy is simple. They’re not in Vegas to gamble. They’re there to play a game of statistics, and if they follow the rules strictly, statistics will guarantee that they make money.

Of course, the whole point of gambling is that people get emotional and make stupid decisions, which is exactly what happens to the team. Even worse, there’s a hard hitting anti-counting investigator (Lawrence Fishburne) whose profession is becoming extinct (thanks to new computers that replace their jobs) and who is therefore extra eager to take down the team.

The plot is fairly standard for a thriller, with decent twists and turns and a good build-up to the climax. And the moral of the story is predictable: you get what you deserve, and there is no short-cut (i.e. gambling) to success.

Jim Sturgess is a upcoming actor, and this is the first film I’ve seen him in. His looks and acting style seem to be a mix of Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, and he could be an interesting actor to watch out for. Kate Bosworth plays the female attraction, and is mildly interesting. Kevin Spacey plays the same smartass role he’s played in so many other films, but is still enjoyable to watch. And Lawrence Fishburne doesn’t have enough time to build his character beyond a simple muscle-man with an iron determination.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

May 24th, 2008 3 comments

It’s almost been two full decades since Indiana Jones last made an appearance, and making Indiana Jones 4 is certainly a challenge on 66 year old Harrison Ford. Luckily, with some help from the young and energetic Shia LaBeouf, and a good old-school artistic style, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does not disappoint fans of the classic adventure trilogy.

The film is set in 1957, a time when the U.S. was still under the influence of McCarthyism. That forms an interesting backdrop for the picture, and serves a good does of irony (Indy is accused of being a communist and forced out of his tenure, while he’s being chased around the campus by Russian agents). The plot, stripped to its bare, involves Indy going deep into South America to track down the fabled (you guessed it) Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Other plot elements include an old love from Raiders of the Lost Ark and her son, Cate Blanchett as the antagonist Soviet military scientist (with an professional interest in psychic abilities), an underused John Hurt who portrays a fellow archaeologist, and lots of hidden tombs, traps and lots of skulls.

Never mind the huge plot hole of how can there be whole platoons of Russian agents wandering around the U.S. chasing after Indy – the question barely lingers in your mind as one action sequence after another hit your senses. In a tribute to the earlier films, there are multiple lengthy chases, and unlike most recent popular action films which tend to extensively use flash editing (the Bourne trilogy, Transformers etc.), Indiana Jones 4 is old-school to the bones. The action is clearly depicted, and the camera is steady, which is definitely a refreshing change.

Harrison Ford has definitely aged, and is joked about it in the film by his young sidekick (“What are you? 80?”). Shia LaBeouf seems to be a risky casting at first, but he portrays the renegade young Mutt Williams with a good dose of comical disbelief. And as a major spoiler, audiences will discover that the two characters have a closer relationship then it seems at first. I wonder if there is the possibility of a new series of films with LaBeouf in the central spotlight.

Kaesong, Day 4

Myohyang-san, Day 3

May 18th, 2008 No comments

Pyongyang, Day 2

May 15th, 2008 No comments
