Last Chance Harvey (2008)

May 30th, 2009 No comments

There’s something sad yet poetically beautiful about aging. It’s a fact of life that everyone needs to come to terms with. Nothing in this world lasts forever, perhaps the least of which being our flesh. Aging, therefore, brings us a new perspective upon this world, but what that perspective is could be wildly different for different people, and even different for the same person at various stages of his/her life.

For instance, as we age and gain experience, we could learn to avoid our mistakes. We learn to be more cautious, more wary of things that look too good to be true. Painful memories of past hurts construct an invisible shield, protecting us from future harm.

But these shields also block out what could be some of the most beautiful and authentic feelings in life, and distort our goals and priorities. We become pragmatic, and pursue material goals instead of ideals and dreams. Thankfully, aging gives us another chance – a last chance – later in life, when we could reflect and understand what the most important things in life truly are.

Apologies for the above offbeat musings aside, Last Chance Harvey, as the title suggests, is about Harvey (Dustin Hoffman) and his “last chance” to make something out of his life. Harvey is a mildly successful commercial music producer, but his career is facing a crisis. His personal life is disastrous, as he is flying off to London from New York to attend his daughter’s wedding, only to find that he is positioned as an outsider by his ex-wife, and that his daughter has asked her stepfather instead of him to participate in the ceremony.

At perhaps the lowest point of his life, he meets the equally hapless Kate (Emma Thompson), who has the thankless job of surveying travellers at Heathrow airport (she works for the Public Statistics Service). Kate is way past the age of “young”, but still hasn’t started a family, and her mom is “peculiar” to say the least ever since her father ran off to continental Europe with his secretary.

Of course, judging from the look and feel of the poster above, you can guess that Harvey and Kate hit it off. It’s a fragile relationship, unrealistic from the word go, but somehow by the end of the film’s 90 minutes, the couple has found a way to face their true emotions. And this is where aging comes in – for both of them, there is an subtle sense of urgency, a feeling of “this or never”, and they share a common view of what matters to them most.

Last Chance Harvey is not a melodramatic love epic. Its premise is simple. It works because of the strong leads and the great dialogue. Their feelings and emotions are sincere and authentic, and this old pair shows the audience what love could and should be – and how poetic it is.

Frost/Nixon (2008)

May 30th, 2009 Comments off

Frost/Nixon is Ron Howard’s dramatic retelling of British journalist and TV presenter David Frost’s interviews of former US President Richard Nixon in 1977. Howard obviously has very good material on his hands (the film is an adaptation of the play by Peter Morgan), and with the support of an excellent ensemble cast, delivers a top-notch studio production.

The film is satisfying as a tense political drama (thriller almost). British actor Michael Sheen (he played Tony Blair in The Queen) skillfully portrays David Frost, a talented, ambitious and flamboyant media man, whose Nixon project is looked upon as a joke by his media peers (and which the Nixon camp is hoping to leverage to stage a come-back). For Frost, the stakes are high – what had started simply as a bold idea to revive his US TV prospects developed into a win-or-lose-all fight for his entire career.

Frank Langella’s Nixon will surely be compared to Anthony Hopkins’ attempt in Oliver Stone’s biopic. Here we see a growling, lonely old man who still craves for power and influence, and whose sheer will and spirit, as well as self-reflection revealed in a few powerfully emotional scenes, will be hard not to win sympathy from the audience (indeed, the film has been criticized by some as over-sympathetic towards Nixon).

1033 days of consulting

May 27th, 2009 8 comments

Maarten, Torsten, Eduardo, Shreyans, Felicia, James, Lois.

Kheehong, Junghee, Dong-hoon, Hyung Woo, Tim, Iris.

High Noon (1952)

May 24th, 2009 4 comments

High Noon has very high esteem in the world of westerns, and even in the bigger realm of film history as well. Gary Cooper won an Oscar for his performance as the lone hero, Marshal Will Kane. The film is text-book material for black-and-white cinematography, and I would also comment that the film’s “real time” element (where the film’s 85 minutes tells the story of Will Kane’s an hour and a half on a Sunday morning) was 24 before Kiefer Sutherland was even born.

All the praise aside, this is not really my kind of western though. Perhaps the film’s values are a bit dated, but the whole story appears relatively tame and (childishly) unrealistic. But maybe that’s because my own taste for westerns had always been heavily influenced by Clint Eastwood’s body of work – I have a natural inclination for films where the protagonist is a man with real faults instead of a saintly figure, and is put through hard ordeals before getting his reward. In other words, I like gritty, dark westerns, instead of swashbuckling, melodramatic ones. High Noon unfortunately falls closer to the latter category.

But really, this is a matter of style and presentation. Gary Cooper’s protagonist is by most standards the definitive hero. He doesn’t need to stay and fight, and the is swimming against the tide with no one by his side. But he does it anyway. He does it because he holds morals and values above life, and he doesn’t know any other way to live but to stand tall whatever the odds. This makes him stand out against the rest of his fellow-men, who are cowards regardless of being friend or foe. This may very well be a social metaphor for the times, since the 1950s was the era of McCarthyism and Hollywood was certainly a battleground.

I have little misgivings about the character; I just didn’t like the presentation very much. The “real time” element works well in building tension – every clock in the film took on an ominous meaning as the harbinger of doom – and the symbolic montage as noon arrived is certainly a classic one minute of film, but other than that I found the film somewhat dreary and lacking in suspense. I know I’m judging the film against decades of storytelling evolution whereby Hollywood has since mastered the art of delivering action-packed thrills, and therefore is being inherently biased, but I couldn’t help feeling how slow sometimes the film was, and the action sequences just didn’t deliver enough satisfaction compared to the previous hour of build-up narrative. At the end of the day, I guess what I mean is that this film just hasn’t aged well (e.g. watch Dr. No and compare it to the latest Bond film, it’s really hard to say the first film was a good film in any regard.)

May 23rd, 2009 No comments

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

May 18th, 2009 No comments

Cool Hand Luke is one of Paul Newman’s signature films. The film is of an anti-establishment theme, portraying the life of “southern road gangs” (convicts who built and maintained roads). Newman’s titular character, Luke, is a “war hero” who is sent to prison because of damaging public property while under influence (a starkly comical opening scene).

At the camp, Luke finds his fellow inmates to be a bunch of losers who have petty dreams and obediently listens to orders. The gang is lead by Dragline (George Kennedy in a Oscar-winning role, well deserved), a rowdy but sincere illiterate country-man. Dragline dislikes the new kid with the instinctively rebelious heart – and their continuous friction eventually results in a fair round of boxing. Luke is no match for Drag, who is so much bigger than him; but Luke never gives up, and begrudgingly wins Drag’s respect with his big heart. In turn, they become best friends, with Drag taking Luke under his wings and fondly calling him “my boy”.

Luke seems to be content with prison life – he longs for physical freedom, but he is able to find enjoyment in the trivialities (for example handily winning a bet that he can eat 50 eggs in an hour – one of the film’s most memorable scenes). And his soul was free. However, when Luke gets news of his mother’s passing, he starts to become restless. He now yearns for real freedom – and for the remaining half of the film, it is a struggle between his will and the social authorities that imprisons him.

In many ways, Luke is a recurring character in films. Jack Nicholson would have a similar role 8 years later, as R.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest; another decade later, Tim Robbins would win the world over as Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. There are definitely similarities to be drawn. These films all feature a rebelious and brave character – the definitive protagonist really – that just wouldn’t back down from the world’s absurd rules and brazen injustices; and their narratives, regardless of whether the protagonist “wins” or “loses” at the end, all force the audience to reflect on what is “normal” and what is “right”, and makes us ponder whether we are cowards at heart or willing to stand up when common sense – and not “social norms” – tells us that something is wrong.

And these films all have a fantastically talented actor at their career best. Paul Newman is an actor that I have not had the privilege of seeing more, and I am fascinated by his depth, diversity and intensity. This film is so much his personal stage – and in every scene he is simply outstanding.

May 16th, 2009 No comments

May 13th, 2009 No comments

May 12th, 2009 1 comment
